2004 gmc sierra 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Even compared to more recently introduced or re-engineered models from ford, dodge, and nissan, the sierra rides and handles very well. new for 2004 is a roomy and comfortable sierra 1500 crew cab available with 2wd or 4wd, in sle or slt trim. Built with a new 5-foot, 8-inch cargo box the new 1500 crew cab is shorter than extended-cab trucks and is designed for easier parking and maneuverability. Crew cab models offer a rear-seat dvd entertainment center as an option, making these pickups an attractive alternative to a full-size suv. gmc sierra’s current design dates from 1999, but it was significantly refined and updated last year, with a bolder, more raked front end. Its interior was revised as well, for improved function and appearance. The brakes were upgraded, and the engines tuned to run cleaner. these are great tow vehicles. The 2500/3500 hd models come with a 300-horsepower, 6. 0-liter v8. Carpeting and cloth seats are also standard. The w/t (work truck) package is now available on all sierra models. The w/t deletes the front-end chrome and carpeting, and substitutes vinyl seats, for a credit of $200-$700, depending on cab style. sle trim adds a cd player, fog lamps, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Leather upholstery is optional. Slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds automatic air conditioning, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and onstar telecommunications. sierra denali, the flagship of the fleet, is an extended-cab, short-bed 4x4. Denali packs a 325-horsepower version of the 6. 0-liter v8, along with automatic transmission and an exclusive, sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali comes with onstar, tone-on-tone leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, a unique console and other exclusive amenities. It's equipped with steering wheel controls for the audio system, onstar, trip computer, and other programmable functions. Quadrasteer comes packaged with a limited-slip differential and a trailer-tow package. walkaroundthe front styling of the gmc sierra ties it closely to the mid-size gmc envoy, and to some of the great gmc pickups of the past. The chrome-framed grille consists of three black horizontal bars that prominently display a big red gmc emblem. Chromed front bumpers include two airflow cutouts. Up-level models have a body-colored lower front fascia; base models have a light-charcoal fascia. compared with the chevy silverado, gmc’s styling is more conservative, more mature, with smoother, more sophisticated lines. An optional grille/brush guard adds front-end protection. A single onstar roof antenna combines the gps and cell-phone functions. the load height (the distance from the ground to the bed) for 2wd sierra models is just 31. 6 inches. For 4wd models, it's 33. 7 inches. all gmc sierras are built on the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever produced. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large steel components. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. interiorthe gmc sierra cab remains among the roomiest in the industry, with large door openings to aid entry and exit. The interior was extensively redesigned for 2003. the seats are big and cushy. Other pickup owners find the gm seats more to their liking. Also, the interior door handles are ropey and awkward. the instrument cluster features highly legible gauges with white backlighting and orange pointers. The denali’s gauges feature blue backlighting and white pointers. A driver information center reports on as many as 27 vehicle functions with an easy-to-read, single-line lcd display. A compass is incorporated into the overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. audio and climate controls, which were introduced for 2003, are sophisticated, yet easy to operate. The system comes with am, fm1, fm2, xm1, and xm2 bands. Optional audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes. It includes a storage compartment and a 12-volt power outlet at the rear. (all sierras come with three 12-volt power outlets at the bottom center of the dash.) vents and hvac controls for rear-seat passengers are mounted on the rear of the center console on crew cabs and extended cabs. extended-cab models offer surprisingly good back seat accommodations. Climb through the reverse-opening rear door and find a seat that’s reasonably comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be loosened from the floor with a wrench and removed through one of the side doors. Not exactly quick release, but a useful feature. the rear seats in the crew cab models are as roomy as the second-row of seats in a suburban. With optional leather, a crew cab feels truly luxurious. Rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down, providing a large protected cargo area inside the cab. a panasonic dvd system 995) is available for the 1500 crew cab, turning it into a real family vehicle. The system comes with a seven-inch flip-down screen for watching dvd movies and cartoons, a cd player, two sets of wireless headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs. safety is enhanced with dual-stage airbags (1500 only), which deploy with less force in less-severe collisions. An automatic passenger-sensing system assesses whether the occupant in the seat is an adult or child, based on weight and seat belt tension, and deactivates the passenger-side air bag accordingly. An indicator light in the rearview mirror lets the driver know when the airbag is deactivated. Three-point seat belts are provided in all first and second-row seat positions. driving impressionno question, gmc sierra represents a great line of full-size pickups. On the road, the sierra is quiet and well behaved, more so than other full-size pickups. It's stable at high speeds, particularly the longer wheelbase (143. 5-inch) models. It rides well and handles well. the 5300 v8 makes for an enjoyable engine around town and on the interstate. The 5. 3-liter (327-cubic-inch) engine is rated 295 horsepower with 330 pounds-feet of torque, plenty for light towing and hauling. With 285 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet, the 4. 8-liter. Luxurious and quiet. introductiongmc completely re-engineered and redesigned its line of pickup trucks last year. The sierra does everything better than the previous-generation c/k pickups (which are still available). It rides better, handles better and stops quicker. It is faster and more powerful. And it's more comfortable. The sierra is one of the most luxurious pickups we've ever driven, setting new standards for quietness, plushness, and freedom from squeaks and rattles. gmc has chosen a conservative design for its new sierra. But the design breaks it away from the chevrolet silverado. The sierra uses a unique grille, hood, fenders, fascia, bumpers and headlamps to make it distinctive. Underneath the sierra's conservative looks is a great truck that has almost nothing in common with the way things used to be done at gmc before it was combined permanently with pontiac. New options include fender guards for 4x4 models, soft tonneau cover, a new automatic dimming mirror with a built-in compass and exterior thermometer. there's also more power: horsepower and torque ratings are increased for the 4. 8-liter v8 and 5. 3-liter v8 engines; and trailer towing ratings have been revised upward. the 2000 gmc sierra is built on a frame that is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape steel. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness. three v8 engines are available, in 4. 8-, 5. 3- and 6. 0-liter displacements, from 270 to 300 horsepower. All three are based on the new gm small-block v8. A 4. 3-liter v6 is still available and comes with a number of improvements, but the v8s will be sold in much higher volumes. a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard in the base truck. All offer a smooth, quiet ride and quality feel. interiorthe gmc sierra's interior is one of the most inviting and comfortable in the business. the interior reflects traditional gmc pickup truck thinking. The door openings are now the largest in the industry and the cab is the roomiest. All use pleasant graphics in white on black. The sound system control panel is located above the climate controls. There are three 12-volt outlets at the bottom center of the dashboard for radar detectors, cellular telephones, laptop computers, and other accessories. The front seats were equipped with optional heaters. Air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the sle's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed through either of the side doors with a wrench. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. This is a very strong truck, and its strength lets the suspension soak up and manage all the bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is luxurious. Its 143. 5-inch wheelbase improves the ride and enhances high-speed stability. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3-liter over the smaller 4. 8-liter version. brakes have been improved substantially over the previous model and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous c/k pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking whether the truck is loaded or empty. Its stylish looks set it apart from the truly conservative silverado. the sierra sle we drove is among the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable pickup trucks we've driven. Move people and stuff. introductioncompletely redesigned just two years ago, gmc yukon xl comes loaded with major changes for 2003 that add convenience, refinement, and reliability. interiors have been redesigned with new seats, a new instrument panel, a new steering wheel with new controls, and new audio and climate control systems that are both more sophisticated and easier to use. The heating and air conditioning systems themselves have been improved for faster warm-ups and cool-downs. Brakes have been upgraded for improved performance and pedal feel. Turn those features off, turn them on, or deploy them partially. Everything is programmable. New bose stereos, xm satellite radio, panasonic dvd video, wireless headphones, independent controls, and auxiliary inputs galore should ensure everyone is happy for crying out loud. New air bag systems offer improved safety. An all-new electrical architecture eliminates thick bundles of wires and hundreds of connections for improved reliability and easier repair. Engine improvements result in quicker throttle response, better reliability and lower emissions levels. yukon xl remains an excellent choice for families who need three rows of seats on a regular basis. It can haul six to nine people and/or a boatload of cargo. That's right, 8. 1-liters. based on gm's excellent full-size truck platform, gmc yukon xl and chevrolet suburban have much in common, but there are some key differences that go well beyond styling. As gm's upscale truck division, the gmc is available with more luxury features, more power, and better handling in adverse conditions than what's available from chevrolet. It comes in two load ratings: most popular is the standard 1500 model is rated to tow trailers up to 8400 pounds (8100 pounds with 4wd). The heavy-duty 2500 2wd 38,905) and 2500 4wd 41,605) are rated to pull trailers up to 12,000 pounds. A locking rear differential is standard on the denali. . walkaroundgmc yukon xl is a long-wheelbase version of the yukon, just as the chevrolet suburban is a long wheelbase version of the tahoe. Xl means extra long. Yukon xl is based on the same platform as the yukon, but it's stretched 14 inches in wheelbase and about 20 inches overall. While yukon can carry a lot of people or haul a lot of cargo, yukon xl can do both at the same time. Denali comes with a 320-horsepower 6. 0-liter vortec v8. Yukon xl 2500 models offer a choice of the 6. 0-liter v8 or 8. 1-liter big-block v8. It has a 2wd mode that was revised for 2003 for more fuel-efficient operation. Shift into 4wd and it locks the front and rear axle speeds together. However, pressing a button switches the system to an auto 4wd mode that automatically shifts torque between the front and rear wheels as conditions demand, good for wet pavement, gravel roads, or inconsistent conditions. Autotrac was revised for 2003 for improved feel in auto mode when turning corners at low speeds. A locking rear differential is optional, but a good idea for heavy snow or serious off-road driving. denali uses a sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali trades the standard yukon xl's black grille for a bright mask of fine-metal mesh, but swaps the chrome bumpers for body-color bumpers to keep the overall flash level about equal. Round fog lights are neatly tunneled into the lower part of denali's unique front bumper. Oddly shaped lower body cladding incorporates front and rear stone guards and blends nicely into the denali's color-keyed running boards. opting for quadrasteer does not improve the appearance of the yukon xl as ungainly fender flares are added to the rear to accommodate the significantly wider track (by five inches). . interiorthe gmc yukon xl and chevrolet suburban are leaders when it comes to seating and cargo capacity. Yukon xl comes standard with nice custom cloth upholstery. Cushy, multi-adjustable and swathed in ultrasoft leather, we had trouble getting comfortable in them. The seat bottoms lacked support and didn't seem long enough. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for sunglasses and other items. It would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. It would be better still if the top of the console wasn't angled forward: lay a clipboard there and it'll slide off. interior ergonomics are otherwise excellent. Cup holders are superb, an important feature for people who live and work in these things. A well-designed pair of map lights is mounted above and can be aimed. A covered power outlet is conveniently located for cell phones and radar detectors, in addition to the cigar lighter inside the ashtray compartment. The driver information center is redesigned for 2003, now located immediately in front, below the speedometer. It's very handy and easy to use, allowing the driver to program automatic locking and other features, as well as providing trip mileage, fuel economy and other data. new audio and climate controls are more sophisticated, yet easier to operate than last year's (2002) models. All yukon xl models come with a high level of standard equipment. New audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes, among other things. Digital three-zone climate controls permit separate adjustments for driver, passenger, and the rear. The rear heating/air conditioning controls are mounted overhead, good for people as well as pets. buttons for homelink, which can open garage doors and gates and turn on house lights, and the onstar telematics system are nicely integrated. Gm's onstar security and information service works well as a navigation system because there's nothing to program. Press the button and a human operator comes on to provide directions and other assistance. Press the emergency button and they'll send out the troops. They recline and seemed more supportive and more comfortable than the front seats.
